This summer I had my very own epiphany; lime green walls and forest green carpeting should not be combined, ever. Unfortunately, that horrid color combination was my room in a nutshell, so I decided it was time to redecorate. Right off the bat I decided that I would go for a ‘minimalist’ look, or interior design similar to something you would see in a big city apartment bedroom. The biggest decision I needed to make was color scheme, something that I had previously discovered could make or break a room. My parents told me I could paint my room whatever color I wanted and after much deliberation I chose white (exciting, I know).
Shortly after my room was painted I decided that carpet just was not my style, and a week later the carpet was pulled up to reveal a beautiful wood floor that I now love with all my heart (no, I’m not exaggerating). Adorning my room with new decorations was the most fun part of my summer project. I shopped for decorations and furniture at World Market, Pottery Barn, Urban Outfitters, and Ikea. I have two hanging terrariums in my room, and those are my favorite decorations.
The most interesting part of the process was the creativity it pulled out of me. I do not consider myself an artist in the least, but after re-designing my room I gained a new appreciation for art and the importance of visual appeal. Before my summer project I would see a room and absorb it as a whole instead of looking at it piece by piece. I now see rooms with a new perspective, I look at the color scheme, focus points, and decorations separately. There are some pictures of my room attached at the bottom of this post, enjoy! -liz
